Writing Celebration!

Today we had a writing celebration to celebrate the awesome writing we have been doing in 4th grade! We are 3/4 of the way through our Realistic Fiction/Short Story unit.  The 4th graders had the opportunity to write, rewrite, revise, edit and publish a short story.  We worked through the process with various lessons to teach: idea generation, story arc, character development, setting, writing good leads, writing good endings, revising and rewriting, and editing.  We published our best story so far.  At the celebration we were able to collaborate with other members of our class,  we decided what we did best at while writing, we read our stories to our table, and we gave each other compliments.  We also shared juice and cookies!  Next, we will use what we have learned to write the best short story we can, but this time quicker and with self direction.  We cannot wait to compare our stories to see how we will improve!

Sledding Fun!

Last week, the 4th graders were given the task of writing to convince me to let them go sledding.  This was one of a few culminating activities for our persuasive writing unit.  The kiddos were able to use their knowledge of topic sentences, using opinion and convincing language appropriately, and staying on topic to write the paragraph.  After writing our drafts we published these paragraphs on kidblog.org.

They did such a great job, and had so many convincing arguments that I was convinced to let them go sledding on our half day, Wednesday.  Take a look at their persuasive writing below, as well as all the fun we had sledding!

Disguise the Turkey Project

Before Thanksgiving the 4th graders were tasked with disguising a turkey at home with their families to ensure it was not eaten for Thanksgiving dinner.  We teamed up with Miss Price's class to award each turkey with special Thanksgiving ribbons.  The students also wrote about their turkeys and either gave a description or wrote about their turkey as a character in a fiction story (as a book blurb).  Later the students were able to voice over their turkey picture with their writing and their products are below!
